Aloha, Everyone!
It's hard to believe that the fall, winter and spring have gone by since I wrote in the Captain's Log! I know many of you are wondering how Cindy, our with-child first mate, is doing. Well, you will be delighted to know that on March 29, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Keoni Radon Miles. Mother and son are doing very well, thankyou! Please see below for a couple of excellent photos courtesy of Cindy's mom. Cindy will hopefully be back on the "Kamanu" in about a month, probably just for our morning sail for awhile.
Our winter season went very well, with no storms or bad weather for the second winter in a row. Strong tradewinds (east northeast) dominated the Central Pacific, and the Kona coast is protected from these winds so we had pretty nice conditions most of the winter and spring. The surf got big a few times but never dangerous.
The major disappointment of the winter was the lack of our celebrated other visitors, the Humpback Whales. The jury is still out as to why their numbers were so reduced on the Kona Coast. Apparently they were normal on the other islands. Some folks say it was the Navy sonar testing the winter before that kept them away but I think not. Any ideas?
We also have not posed much of a threat lately to the sportfishing fleet! We have only caught one small mahimahi in the past few months. The ono season has started now so hopefully we'll catch one soon.
We are gearing up for a strong summer season, as the advance numbers look good. We appreciate all of the nice comments we've received by email and hope to see y'all again in the not too distant future. For first time visitors to our website, welcome! We hope to take you out sailing and snorkeling on our blue waters soon...
Mahalo Nui,
Jay
